Personalized Medicine

Research areas:
The long-term objective of the research is to provide individual, patient-specific variables of clinical significance, which contribute to the implementation of personalized treatment of the critically ill. Our research group investigates the impact of host genetic factors on the clinical course of sepsis and sepsis-associated organ dysfunction. Functional polymorphisms within innate immunity genes are a major focus of our investigation. We have been able to demonstrate that a Regulatory Polymorphism within the Programmed Cell Death (Protein 1) otherwise known as PD-1 and CD279 (Cluster of Differentiation 279) which has been shown to impact sepsis-associated immunosuppression, is also associated with decreased 90 day survival in patients with sepsis. Another significant finding is that genetic variants which result in strong Pro-Inflammatory Response (e.g. within the CD14 and TLR4 gene) in patients with sepsis have beneficial effects on the clinical course of sepsis.

In addition, investigation is on-going on the clinical consequences of other patient-specific characteristics e.g. chronic morbid states in sepsis and sepsis-associated organ dysfunction. Furthermore, the research team is working collaboratively with international experts (scientists and clinicians) using a Systems Medicine Research Approach in order to better understand the physiological and clinical consequences of immunological changes over the course of sepsis.
